Covering the 'Roadkill

Here's a peak at the cover art for my upcoming trash-movie zine, VHS ROADKILL, featuring my tribute to one of my favorite lost-treaure Ozsploitation flicks, THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS (1974).
I drew this behind the counter at Isotope Comics in San Francisco while I was working, penciling and inking on an art board I put on my lap to scribble away on between customers. As a teen I drew in front of people all the time but sometime in my 20s I started taking art far too seriously and ended up being one of those who agonized over every line, and preferred to work in private. But no longer. If I was ever going to get anything done, and man do I have so much I want to get done, I'd have to start drawing in public again and embrace the freeform fuckups that come with it. Over this past year people have seen me do so much art behind the counter they've all pretty much gotten used to seeing me drawing, scribbling, and swearing under my breath.
The hardest part was discovering how few of my customers, even serious film fanatics, had ever even heard of THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS. Seriously?
Clearly I can't get this zine and movie rental club started soon enough!
Isotope Home Video

I started assembling my personal collection of VHS tapes back in the 1980s. It's a small, highly curated, assemblage of stagflation-generation movies, usually full of societal collapse and existential crisis, recorded onto cheap junky analog tape for the un-connoisseur crowd. Trashy end-of-the-world stuff, biker flicks, headtrip sci-fi, V-8sploitation, Ivan Stang's Subgenius dreamtapes, as well as a bunch of low-budget live punk rock concerts.
Inspired by the re-opening of legendary San Francisco punk club Mabuhay Gardens which sat empty and dormant for almost 40 years, and memories of the curated collection of my beloved Four Star Fiction and Video, the hip bookstore where I rented my first tape (THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS, I think) and also so many of those punk rock concert videos (many of which were filmed at Mabuhay Gardens!), I decided it was time to let these tapes of mine out to the world to do their job of mutating the minds of others just like they had teenage me. So I've been working on building a rack, and starting the Isotope Home Video rental club, complete with an old school zine to go with it called VHS ROADKILL.
I'm digging getting my pencil and pens to paper for the zine, especially. It will be featuring a lot of my obsessive movie-art I am making to go along with hand-typed informational pages. The whole project has been a perfect antidote for my brain to the flood of boring homogenized AI art the internet is constantly vomiting up. And I'm definitely following my own advice to young cartoonists at my comic store, "Drive your art as hard as you can into your own personal errors, shove the gas pedal on what is you down to the fucking floor, and the uglier and more mutated the result the better." So enjoy my imperfect hand drawn wobbly handcrafted zine logo. There's a lot more ugly and mutated art to come.
It's been a long, long, long time since I loaned anyone one of my VHS tapes.
Undead Love

Too long has this stitched-together-from-dead-parts weblog slept quietly in slumber. As the demands of analogspace and ever-struggling dual-cores mounted, the creature hibernated, and the seasons of silicon silence passed quickly. But today we flip that electric reanimation switch and get this beautiful, flawed, tragic monster back on its feet.
Very recently I've finally connected up with a like-minded (and much more technically savvy) fellow HyperCard fan, Jeff, to help me build something to replace the long-dormant HyperCard Online and enable folks like you and me to upload HyperCard stacks to run on the vMac emulator at Archive.org. Halleluja! With his help we're going to craft a NeoCities site full of tools and tutorials to bring new access to the wonders of vintage Apple HyperCard to artists, tinkerers, and retro zine makers.
It was HyperCard's original creator Bill Atkinson's populist dream to bring his simple, but powerful, programming tool to the people. So much so that Atkinson gave it to his bosses at Apple for free under the condition that it was distributed and given away for zero dollars to anyone who bought an Apple computer. Beautiful. I like to think that our efforts with his original vision in mind is something Mister Atkinson would be proud to see.
So it is time to get this Frankenstein creature of a Creative Workblog up and shamblin' again.

ELECTRIK RAVE @ VCF WEST 2025

Whoo-hoo! I launched my first Commodore Amiga project ever over the weekend, ELECTRIK RAVE Amiga DiskMag / Scala ScriptZine!
ELECTRIK RAVE is a “virtual-rave" Floppy Disk magazine in honor of the 40th Anniversary of Commodore Amiga Computer, I made in conjunction with AMIGA/040th, a huge celebration + mind-blowing display at VCF WEST 2025 held at the gorgeous Computer History Museum. Inspired by Amiga Video Toaster VJs I saw making psychotronic visuals in techno clubs in the 1990s, I have always wanted to make art on one of those machines, and decades later I finally have...
I envisioned this zine as a kind of 880k hand-stamp at the door to my own personal "Club Amiga" - a way to share that vibe - and invited the zine's readers to "hit the virtual dance floor" alongside the special guest stars I intervioewed for the issue - world-famous Amiga musicians, old school underground video jockies, and the next generation of Amiga Computer artists. And with our club's very own booze-forward signature cocktail recipe by Kirsten Baldock, the so-tasty and so-toasty, "Video Toaster" cocktail!
Working with the Amiga for the first time (a beautiful Amiga A1200 from 1992) was certainly fairly obtuse and challenging for someone like myself who comes at this whole retro computing world from an art-centric as opposed to a tech-centric background. There were many tears and frustrations during those 155 days since I first got my hands on one of these legendary and kind of obscure computers. But man, I *wanted* to succeed at this project *so much* I kept sitting my ass down at the keyboard and refused to give up.
There was a white-knuckle race to the finish line for sure & I had to bring my Amiga to work with me and work on the pixel-art cover drawn dot-by-painful-dot as I sat behind the counter of my comic shop. That was particularly arduous. But... Somehow I got it finished in time. And also got to do interviews for the zine with everyone I asked. Amazing!
I had an incredible time (and made some really cool new friends) at AMIGA/040th and VCF WEST vinatge computer fest and got to put 880k Floppies in the hands of several Amiga legends, including Bob "Kodiak" Burns (I hope he likes the words I wrote in all those original Amiga fonts he designed)! As VCF WEST is a full-on retro computing convention, I also met a bunch of folks who were fans of my NEUROBLAST HyperCard DiskZines. Really cool to see how enthusiastic people are about these silly DiskMags I've made.
So yeah, a great weekend, and ELECTRIK RAVE was a real dream come true project!

HOLOGLAM's "Atomic Funhouse" Arrives This November

You're hearing it here first: The debut single and music video for my synth-glam band HOLOGLAM, fronted by the amazing MEDIA MELTDOWN magistrate Piranha Psychotronica, is arriving on the San Francisco scene in high style... at the resurrection of SF's legendary San Francisco Underground Film Fest! So later this summer I'll be locked away in my studio putting the final synth-y and glam-y touches on this song. And you can expect to see HOLOGLAM's own Cherry Cosmic, Kae Ray, and Jimmi Nova out filming at all your favorite late-night "Funhouses" in September and October. Awesome to get this project up and rocking again!
Time For Some Foxy 8-Track Tape Shit

As evidenced by earlier posts on here - I am deep down a creative hole working to get an Amiga DiskMag finished in time for the AMIGA/040th anniversary convention at VCF WEST 2025 vintage computer fest. To keep myself sane during the frustrating and demoralizing journey of making an Amiga DiskMag, I've been tinkering around with a new NeoCities website devoted to the analog goodness of old 8-track tapes to give my brain a much-needed mental palete cleanser. I didn't get very far, and it's rough looking, but it is getting a riduculous number of views for a barely-there site. I guess I'm not the only one on the Neo' who likes 8-tracks.

Broke The Weblog Again
